Current work focuses on assessing infiltration rates of various vegetated stormwater BMPs (Hillcrest Community Center Bioretention Cell, Topeka, KS; Jackson Street Bioretention Cell, Topeka, KS; Native grass filtering strips, Fort Riley, KS) and monitoring the effectiveness of several stormwater BMPs in Topeka. Baseline infiltration data has been collected at each site with monitoring to continue over the next 3 years. Data will provide information on the interaction of different soil types, vegetation species, and vegetation age/maturity. Water quality monitoring sites were established at the Quinton Heights and Monarch Meadows subdivisions during 2005 to determine the impact the various BMPs have on reducing pollution discharge and water quantity. Additional monitoring sites will be established to collect more data and further our understanding of vegetated stormwater management systems.
