After years of periodic basement flooding during heavy rainstorms and thousands of dollars worth of clean up and removal costs, residents in the Turnpike Avenue neighborhood contacted Water Pollution Control. The neighbors asked WPC to determine the feasibility of devising a flooding solution that would prevent yard and basement flooding in the future.

Upon investigation, WPC determined that three homes along Turnpike Avenue were lower in elevation than the other homes in this small watershed. Their location meant that they were receiving a large portion of the runoff from the surrounding neighborhood during each rainstorm. WPC met with the homeowners and discussed options. The homeowners signed a Permanent Public Improvement Easement form to allow WPC to make the necessary drainage improvements along the easement that divided their yards from their upper neighbors' yards.

To alleviate the water accumulating in and around these homes, a swale was constructed along the easement with a series of earthen berms that directed the water into another swale between two of the homes. The area of construction was sodded and new fencing along the berms was installed to complete the project.
